How the magnetic fastening works

A fixed round magnet sits at the centre of the back and pairs with a separate perforated round plate. We tested these powerful magnets on a range of materials: they hold on wool and remain joined through 5 mm faux leather.

Seams, folds, multiple layers, curves and movement can alter stability at a particular point. Put the garment on after fitting the brooch and check the hold precisely where it will be worn. Checking the hold at the chosen position

• Place the decorated circle on the outside of the material.
• Bring the rear plate slowly towards the fixed magnet.
• Move as you normally would and check that it stays stable.
• Test again if a fold or extra layer is introduced.

Sliding the back plate aside for removal

Hold the broad steel frame rather than a flower or butterfly. Slide the rear plate sideways until the magnetic pull reduces, then separate both parts. This controlled movement avoids placing unnecessary pressure on the raised decorative elements.
